Detroit Tigers:

The Tigers were one win away from reaching the ALCS last year. A feat that the team hasn’t accomplished since 2013 when they fell to the then David Ortiz-led Red Sox. This year, they look to get over the hump.

Detroit was aggressive in free agency and secured one of the most sought-after starting pitchers this class had to offer. Framber Valdez is heading to “Motor City” on a 3-year deal and figures to create one of the most intimidating one-two punches in the American League alongside Tarik Skubal.

Offensively, the team will go as far as Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson will take them. That is not as good as you may think. Both struggle with finding consistency and they swing-and-miss more often then they should (one of the reasons for their late-season implosion in 2025).

If their lineup can hold it together, their elite rotation will carry them to the promised land.

San Diego Padres:

Insert sounds of a window closing

The Padres put themselves on the baseball map by bringing in Manny Machado in 2019. After that, they witnessed the arrival of their most electric superstar talent in Fernando Tatis Jr. Xander Bogaerts and Juan Soto quickly followed. The team was enjoying the most powerful core in their franchise’s history.

However, their long-hated rivals have won three championships in that span and the Friars have failed to make it past the NLCS.

It is obvious this team is as talented and competitive as any other. Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Mason Miller figure to be the three-headed monster leading San Diego to consistent playoff spots for the next decade. Nevertheless, with uncertainty revolving ownership, it is unclear whether or not the team will have the resources available to slay the dragon from up north.

Prediction: DET 2-1
