Matchup Deep Dive: VEN @ ITA

Did anyone see this coming?

Both teams have surpassed all expectations, and now one side will represent their nation in the WBC Championship Game. We have to appreciate the excellent display we have seen from both squads throughout the tournament; yet, unfortunately, it will be the end of the road for one of them.

Team Italy has played with passion and a point to prove. They topped a pool shared with two baseball powerhouses, Team USA and Team Mexico, and cruised (although the game got closer at the end) against Team Puerto Rico in the quarterfinal round. The Royals’ duo of Vinnie Pasquantino and Jac Caglianone has carried the Azzurri, and paired with incredible performances from Aaron Nola and Michael Lorenzen, this team has achieved the unexpected.

Venezuela, on the other hand, has looked every bit the part of a WBC Champion. Ronald Acuña Jr. has returned to his MVP form, and Luis Arraez has silenced his critics. Although Eugenio Suarez has yet to find his timing, Wilyer Abreu and Ezequiel Tovar have more than made up for it. Even after upsetting the reigning champions, Team Japan, this team looks poised to continue its recent surge and passionate play.

Michael Lorenzen will take the mound on Monday looking to build upon his strong performance against Team Mexico. Even as it’s been a joy watching the Vinotinto’s incredible display, I don’t believe in Tigers’ Keider Montero ability to hold down the fort and stop the Italians’ relentless approach.

I like arepas, but pizza never disappoints.

Prediction: VEN 6 – ITA 9
