Pittsburgh Pirates:
Ahh, yes, nothing tells us Opening Day is closer than when we talk about overhyping undeserving teams. The thing is, with these two, you don’t know who I am referring to.
The Pirates have been categorized as one of those teams to blame for not spending as much as they should. Yes they have the second best pitcher in the world in Paul Skenes and a good complimentary arm with Jared Jones, but other than that, I don’t understand the sudden hype revolving the Bucco’s.
The lineup is lacking both depth and power. Their offseason moves don’t necessarily resolve any of those issues. Inking Marcell Ozuna to a one-year deal is not as exciting as it may sound and while the trade for Brandon Lowe is a great move, highly depending on stellar season-long performances from their top-prospects Konor Griffin & Bubba Chandler (who struggled last year in the Big Leagues) is unrealistic. Give Pittsburgh it’s props for trying, but they are still 1-2 years away from truly contending in the National League.
New York Mets:
Moving on to the Mets, oh the Mets. What seemed to be a promising 2025 season ended up being one to forget. After the lucrative $785M contract they gave to Juan Soto, the team appeared not only ready to compete, but to bring a long-awaited championship back to Queens.
During the first half of the season that looked like reality. However, after an abysmal summer stretch, the Mets lost their opportunity of playing October baseball on the last day of the season. This year, they completely re-hauled the roster. Letting elite talent such as Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso walk and replacing them with Jorge Polanco and Devin Williams is far than ideal. Signing Bo Bichette to a staggering 3-yr/$126M deal is not the solution it’s set out to be. This Mets team needs many things to go their way and I can’t imagine a world where they do.
This team is too talented to not contend, but oh well, we are talking about the Mets.
Prediction: NYM 2-1
